MVFHC awarded 3-year performance-based HUD grant
MVFHC President/CEO Jim McCarthy receives grant check from HUD Cincinnati Field Office Director James Cunningham
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced December 12, 2007, that Miami Valley Fair Housing Center (MVFHC) has been awarded a three-year performance-based grant for its work against housing discrimination and helping victims of predatory mortgage loans. At MVFHC's 2007 annual meeting, HUD Cincinnati Field Office Director James Cunningham presented MVFHC President/CEO Jim McCarthy with a check for the first year's installment of the grant.
The grant awarded to MVFHC is one of only thirty-nine multi-year grants awarded to the highest performing of HUD's more than 100 Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) agencies. Multi-year funding allows groups that maintain excellent performance ratings to continue their activities without interruption. Groups not in this category must submit requests for funding each year.

HUD's grant to MVFHC of $275,000 per year for three years, for a total of $825,000, will enable MVFHC to provide complaint intake, investigation and referral for alleged victims of discrimination. MVFHC will conduct

testing in the sales, rental and lending markets for evidence of systemic discrimination and will conduct surveys of multifamily developments for compliance with the accessibility requirements of the Fair Housing Act. In addition, a portion of the grant will support MVFHC's Predatory Lending Solutions (PLS) project as well as fair housing education and outreach activities in Montgomery County.
"This grant represents not only an enormous opportunity for the Fair Housing Center, but also stability for the vital programs we operate in the community. We are very pleased that HUD has honored our performance with this performance-based grant," McCarthy said.
"Over the past fifteen years, the Fair Housing Center has undergone significant growth and worked diligently to improve fair housing services in the Miami Valley and has been the lead agency in the region's response to predatory mortgage lending in assisting homeowners facing foreclosure as a result of predatory mortgage lending through the Predatory Lending Solutions project," McCarthy continued.

In other business at the annual meeting, McCarthy acknowledged the attendance of elected officials—Montgomery County Commissioners Judy Dodge and Debbie Lieberman, Dayton City Commissioner Dean Lovelace, Montgomery County Recorder Willis Blackshear and Dayton Public Schools Board Member Stacy Thompson—and thanked MVFHC's many community partners and public and private resource providers.
In addition, Diane Thompson of the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC), who was hired by MVFHC to consult on its PLS project, reported on the importance of the work done by the PLS staff and on her recommendations as to how they can have a bigger impact against predatory lending in our community.
